Less than a half hour ago someone asekd a question about gay marriage and I included in my answer a brief discussion about the difference between Libertarianism and Egalitarianism. Now the question itself is deleted, so I don't know what he thought of my answer. Darn. But let's find out from some of the rest of you: are you libertarian-minded or egalitarian-minded? See the definition of egalitarianism here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egalitarianism
I've also said before that conservatives tend to be more libertarian while liberals tend to be more egalitarian. And I've said that the gay marriage issue often gets confused because *those of us whose philosophy on gay marriage is egalitarian* don't clearly explain it that way. Libertarian-minded people don't appreciate that any topic pertaining to gay equality is always argued for on the basis of egalitarianism. Are you: Libertarian and for gay marriage? Libertarian but against gay marriage? Egalitarian and for gay marriage? Egalitarian but against gay marriage?

if we are to believe the organizer of the ACTUAL Boston Tea Party, liberty is nothing without equality:
"without Liberty and Equality, there cannot exist that tranquillity of mind, which results from the assurance of every citizen, that his own personal safety and rights are secure... Indeed I cannot but be of opinion, that when those principles shall be rightly understood and universally established, the whole family and brotherhood of man will then nearly approach to, if not fully enjoy that state of peace and prosperity, which ancient Prophets and Sages have foretold."
-- Samuel Adams, to the legislature of Massachusetts (January 17, 1794)
"We must not conclude merely upon a man's haranguing upon liberty, and using the charming sound, that he is fit to be trusted with the liberties of his country. It is not unfrequent to hear men declaim loudly upon liberty, who, if we may judge by the whole tenor of their actions, mean nothing else by it but their own liberty, — to oppress without control or the restraint of laws all who are poorer or weaker than themselves"
-- Samuel Adams; from an untitled essay in the Independent Advertiser (1748)
I am Libertarian and as for gay marriage, I believe it should be left to the heads of the different religious orders, seeing as how it is a religious establishment and the First Amendment specifically states:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
If the different states want to issue contractual unions between people, regardless of sex or number of people involved in the union, it should do so through civil unions.
Closer to libertarian and I'm for anyone getting married that wants to and I'm against giving the goverment the power to determine who should get married and what name it should be called. Marriage is between 2 ppl and does not involve the government.
I'm a libertarian and believe homosexuality is a sin. If people want to behave in that disgusting manner, that's their business and they have every right to, just don't get the government involved.
I am a realist. plain and simple, and I always leave my label maker at the office.
Any two people who wish to share their lives, and love one another, and take care of each other, should have the right and freedom to do, if that is their wish.
No one label will ever cover everyone of that stripe.........and no gov't agency should ever have the power of trying to decide what is right or wrong when it comes to deciding who we love and who loves us in return.
