2000 Sonoma "service Engine Soon" light?

I bought this truck about 2 mos. ago. It was a 1-owner vehicle & is in nice shape. All of a sudden this service light came on.

I will certainly get it "serviced" if it actually needs it, but if it is just a tune up, I can do that myself.

Anyone have a clue about this light coming on? Veh. has about 100,500 on it.

Thanks for the detailed replies! I'll get myself a code reader & see what comes up. I just had the oil changed on Friday...on both vehicles & had the filters & air filters swapped out too.

Pedro..I can do without the condescending tone. As I'd mentioned, I just got this vehicle & know very little about GM's, as my last several cars were all European. Help is always good. Attitude never is. Just something to ponder...that's all.

a tune up is oil change with filter just air filter spark plugs cap rotor if applicable and the fuel filter there are some other small parts like the pcv valve too theres not much to it on these new cars and you can buy a code scanner for it for pretty cheap the reader has to be obd2 and as far as why its on it could be many things i could guess that the mass air flow sensor (this is 1 common reason to make the light come on) is dirty it could be signaling maintenance you need to check the owners manual for that good luck

The service engine light is the indicator telling you that you have reached a predetermined amount of miles on the truck and it is time to change the oil and filter. Then read the owners manual on how to reset the service light. that's it!
