How does this scam work?

You probably had this phone call before "I work for Microsoft and you computer has a virus". Im wonder how does this scam work? They tell you to open some diagnostic console and there's suppose to be error message (i just pretend i did so don't know details) anyone knows what this error is about? and they would ask you go to logmein website. I'm guessing they will upload a trojan/backdoor with it? Wouldn't that website have some protection for that? And how would the scammer profit from this? Identity theft?

A better question is, why didn't you just hang up?

The scam is to first get you to install Logmein (which is a legitimate program used for remote computer assistance, support, etc) They then have access to your computer and they run a fake scan that comes up with bogus results about what is wrong with your computer (they may even deliberately screw up your computer). Then they will ask you to pay to fix these "problems". They aren't spying for personal info or trying to steal stuff off your computer or steal your identity. They want you to agree to pay them to fix your computer. The charge is usually a lot. You agree to pay by credit card and give them your card number. Then they fix things that were never wrong in the first place and you are out anywhere from $50 to $150 dollars.

Any "errors" they say you have are bogus. They can know nothing about your computer until you install Logmein. And if you install Logmein they just use that access to create fake problems on your computer and convince you they are really analyzing your computer for real problems..

That's how the scam works

Take a look at the site below which has a charming session record. This is one of many variants of the same scam, not necessarily taking control of your computer but often simply selling you worthless software.

The ones that use LogMeIn are a little more insidious since they can download software onto your computer using any one of several techniques to mask the exploit, including simply shutting down your firewall and anti-virus temporarily, and even getting you to click the OK to install the software.

Of course none of this works on Linux or MAC because their op systems are at least virus-proof if not entirely exploit-proof.

The scam has two parts

Part 1 is where they install trojans, keyloggers, spyware, etc on your computer then try to get you to pay to remove it

Part 2 is where they copy EVERYTHING off your computer for identity theft purposes. When they are on Logmein they can copy everything -- all files, passwords, emails, online banking details, paypal details, etc, etc, all they need to hijack your accounts, steal your money, and commit identity theft
