If you really want to sleep on the plane, then don't sleep as much the night before so you will be tired. When I am needing to fall asleep on a plane, I close my eyes and think about my trip (or whatever) and then I eventually fall asleep!
What usually works for me is watching a movie. But maybe televisions are not available to you, depending in what class you are traveling in. Is it a night time or dy time flight? I usually take night time flights. Headphones are available to me and they block out all sound, so I plug them in to the built in music radio in the plane and I recline my seat and I close my eyes. I am younger than you, but something that works for me is Benadryl. It's a pill you have to swallow. It takes maybe and hour or two, maybe less, to take effect. It knocks you out for a long time. I took it before boarding a flight and I fell asleep at the airport gate for about 4 hours. I hope I helped!
The problem with sleeping pills is that you'll be drowsy for hours afterward, including when you need to get off and navigate the airport with your bags. If you can stay up, that would be a better idea.
