Choosing a college and major help?!?

I thought i finally had it figured out. I was going to attend either University of IA or IL for psychology. But now my parents are saying i shouldnt be a psychologist because im "too shy" and they "don't make enough money" and people are saying i shouldnt go to such big schools.
Psychology interests me more than anything else so should i ignore my parents and stick with that?
Are big schools really that horrible?
I have a 3.97gpa and got a 31 on my ACT so i just feel going to a small school is a waste when i could get accepted to a bigger and better school.

The answers to your questions are that you should major in some thing that you can fall in love with, and you should study it in a place that you can fall in love with. After all, you'll be there four years.

If you're interested in psychology, go for it. If psychotherapy interests you, you will have to go for a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. Your college advisers will guide you through your bachelor's to graduate school. If business interests you, you can go into human relations (personnel). Beyond that, you can take an MBA as a springboard into other business functions. You could go to law school, but the country is so lawyered up that graduates are suing their law schools for misrepresenting their employment outcomes.

I myself did undergraduate work at UI, Champagne-Urbana, and graduate work at UIA, Iowa City. I loved them both! Their hugeness was what I loved. There was always some thing to do every day and night. I always loved to dance, and there were dances every Wed., Sat., and Sun. nights. I fell in love with chemistry, and I reveled in every chemistry course that Illinois offered.

At Iowa, it was the same. Except that Iowa had four semesters of medieval history. I took them all. I considered taking a Ph.D. in medieval history. I decided against that.

Now it is your turn. Are you really that shy?

The problem wuth Psychology is that it rarely leads to a career in Psychology...

A lot of students pursue it because it's interesting, but not very practical...

Why don't you consider majoring in Business and specializing in Marketing and minor in Psychology which is useful in advertising and elsewhere..

Then you can choose from either one when it's time to think about grad school..

Continue in one, the other, or both...

Good luck..

bigger doesn't always mean better, you just have to decide what kind of atmosphere you will strive in. Unless you get a doctorate degree, you may have trouble finding work with a psychology degree. Take your parents' advice into consideration, but you have to make your own choices. Maybe ask them what they CAN see you doing and look at some of your options. But if this is what you want to do, after thinking it through, do it.
