divorce and debt ofter 5years?

I got divorce in 2007, when we sing all the papers there was no amounts of debt on the divorce papers so I tough we actually did not have any debt because my ex never tool me about it, now my ex is trying to make me pay half of that debt that I never new was there. can he still do that or would I have to pay half?

I did not know he had debt from our marriage, and before we got divorce we sold a condo and he kept all the money form it without letting me have any money or access to his bank account.

Look over the divorce paperwork and make sure it talks about debt and who is responsible for it. There can be something stated like "you are each responsible for all your own debt." It was something under his name and it was not listed in the financial paperwork then no you are not responsible for it. And for him to be going after it after 5 years can be too long as well. Has he given you any paperwork showing that it was a mutual debt during that time. Meaning that he used the credit card to pay for the bills so then maybe. BUT if he kept all the money from the sale of your condo YOU could have had a case against him. Best option find a lawyer in your area and they often will give 30 to 60 minutes of free consultation as long as you have all the paperwork there.

In most states, a married couple both parties are equally responsible for the debt regardless of the name on it.

Not knowing is hard to prove since essentially you can't really prove you didn't know.
