How can I increase my short term memory and attention span?

I get distracted far too easily and I never get anything done at home anymore. Even at work, I tend to forget important details of the projects I have to do and often have to double and triple check things just to be sure I didn't make any serious mistakes. It wasn't always this bad, I have no idea what happened but anytime I go to do something I blank and forget what I had to do or get sidetracked with something unimportant and forget altogether that I had a project. Is there anything I can do to help with this problem? Dietary changes, online memory exercises, anything?

I would like to add in that I don't do any drugs and I very rarely drink. I drink a lot of coffee but otherwise try to keep up with a fairly consistent healthy diet.

So what you're aiming to do is moving items from short term memory to long term memory. Usually your brain can hold between 5-7 items in short term memory before you start forgetting what you began memorizing in the first place. Repetition always helps, or relating it to other things (I need to buy milk, milk=cows=dairy=milk), write important things down (incase you don't have time for repetition, it's always good to write things down, better safe than sorry!)
