My fiance does the equal thing (drinks a shake earlier than and after a workout). The protein shakes taste terrible, so sometimes he mixes his (chocolate flavored) with milk, oatmeal and fruit to make a smoothie. As a rule he uses fat free milk, but water is ok too (despite the fact that it would normally be the worst thing you have got ever tasted).
