I'm a sophomore in high school and a lot of people who have seen my animations (I make them for projects and other things) tell me I could be a professional animator. My mom tells me that my grades are too low for college (3.0 gpa). Do I even need to go to college?

By the time you would graduate from college there will be few, if any, animation jobs left in the USA as they are all being outsourced to low wage Asian countries. So choose another college subject. In most states a 3.0 or even 2.85 unweighted GPA is sufficient for admission to easier campuses of the state university, or you can start at a community college with an even lower GPA. Best wishes.

1) the animation field is relatively small, so the odds of ever finding work in the field is very small, and without a college professional training background the odds are even slimmer.
2) if you're so lazy you don't want to work in school, in preparation for your future, what makes you think employers are looking for employees with a history of being lazy.
3) you mom is trying to tell you to get to work, or the closest you'll get to doing animation is flipping burgers at Disney World.
