in regards to ability being 4x4's, jeep.
'88 bronco's be them full sized or II's have IFS. IMHO, jeeps have better, stronger, more robust drive train/running gear then a full sized bronco. and better articulation due to having SAS.
not familiar with the specs, but i'd bet the full sized bronco may have a lower center of gravity pitted against the cherokee body/chassis.
not a fan of the V6 in the bronco II's. but any ferd V8 i'm a fan of. the jeep I4's and I6's aren't the peppiest. but hold their own in torque. same with their V8's.
don't get me wrong. a properly set up full sized bronco, and II's for that matter, are more than formidable. just not in the same league as any platform with SAS.
no comment on 2WD platforms.

In capability the Jeep. In being able to tow larger loads the Full Size Bronco. The Jeep Cherokees were great vehicles, wouldn't mind having another one. The full size bronco's were gas hogs, the jeep cherokee's were pretty descent for fuel economy with the 4.0L Straight 6 engines which were about the best engine you could get for ease of maintenance and reliability its nothing to get 500,000+ miles on a 4.0L engine before having to consider any major engine work. The jeep is smaller and easier to maneuver on tight offroad courses. The cherokee's also were offered with the selec-trac 4WD system giving both part time an full time 4WD options along with low range and neutral. One of the best 4WD systems ever built. The Bronco's were ok, but extremely top heavy and not very well balanced for any extreme offroading challenges they're just too big for most trails to begin with. For overall performance, reliability, capability, and aftermarket support the jeep cherokee wins every time.
