My husband and I have hosted 8 students from Russia, Hungary, Denmark, Germany (2, both boys, the rest girls), Latvia, Finland, and Israel.
What was our experience? Oh boy, I don't think I can answer that in the limited space I have here. It has been the most incredible, nurturing, funny, challenging, rewarding, frustrating, loving, fun, educational, fun (yes I know I put that in twice), and fulfilling experience of our lives.
Yes, we will be doing it again.
Feel free to email me with more questions.

Yes, we hosted a foreign exchange student from Germany.
It was a good experience. Like many Germans, his English was impeccable and he even corrected us on some things, which was surprising. But it was a very interesting experience and it was quite fun to show him around our city and hear his opinions on different things. I think most students who sign up for these types of programs are going to be interesting and engaged people, people who are grumpy and apathetic don't typically sign up for that type of thing in the first place. Which is not to say that every foreign exchange student will be an angel or anything. But from talking to certain people who've hosted dozens of foreign exchange students the general consensus is that for the most part, they're friendly and interesting people.
I'm actually planning to do it again soon.

We hosted a foreign exchange student from Germany for a week, they were polite but everything was so different for them and they were so curious about everything, just be prepared to answer a lot of questions and we would do it again because its fun to learn about their culture compared to ours, and they are oftenly with their exchange group going on tours and all that, unless its just the one student and no group then you will get to spend a lot of time with them, depending on we're they are from a lot of things will seems so different for them so try to make them as comfortable as possible, they could contact their parents by email or on Facebook since you won't be able to call or text, so it's a great experience and I would totally do it again!

We hosted a 14 year old Japanese girl and enjoyed it very much. She did not speak English as well as she should have but between her limited knowledge of English and my limited knowledge of Japanese this allowed us to get our points across. We would of course do it again.
