What happens if a Little Pony doesn't do what thier cutie mark says?

I know one episode dealt with the marks getting switched magically, and the ponies were extremely unhappy. But that was imposed on them from outside.
What would happen though if Rainbow Dash lost a wing in a terrible accident and couldn't fly anymore, but discovered a new passion for writing adventure stories? Or Mrs. Cake decided never to bake again after the bakery fire accident that killed her family, but maybe she started knitting hoodies for the homeless and really enjoyed that?Or the pony simply decided that even though she was really, really good at making toothpick towers and sculptures, she hated them and would be just as happy to nnever see a friggin toothpick again? Would the Cutie Marks change, or would the pony turn into a neuriotic mess because they weren't living up to thier predetermined destiny? Are there any real choices made?

Wow Patrick, way to jump to stupid conclusions and be a complete jack@$$ at the same time. I happen to be a parent who watches the show with my three year old daughter. The same way I watch everything she does, because I want to be aware of what she's seeing and to be able to discuss them with her.
I also happen to write childrens stories and am always interested is finding and closing plot holes, and expanding on interesting stories. So honestly, I think several years of anal rape might be a bit harsh. Although if that is the going rate for racist, @$$inine trolls, I think they have thier next candidate.

And where did singing to Chinese children come from? I'm totally ok with that personally, but I seriously doubt they want to listen to that. What do you have against those poor children?

Cutie marks are given for what makes a pony happy and for what a pony is good at. It's not just what they're good at. Twilight Sparkle is really good at making lists and she is perhaps the best list maker in the whole world but that's not what her cutie mark is. It's magic sparkle stars as magic is what she's good at too and what makes her happy.

Well, the thing is, for the first 64 episodes, there was some room for interpretation on the Marks. You didn't see Rarity have to go Mining Gems, for example, and there was enough leeway for Rainbow Dash to do both weather control and stunt-flying. Never mind that Miss Cheerilee doesn't even grow _flowers_, ok?

So I think with Season 3 Episode 13, what you're seeing is _magic_ switching Marks around into something _unnatural_ for the characters. And it would seem that the spell had an effect, at least, on every pony _with a Mark_ as well, such that everyone's memory was changed to accept the new situation as "normal" if suck-ish. So no one of the Mane Six even knew they had the wrong Marks, just that everything felt wrong and unnatural when they followed them.

Of course, I'm not going to go much further into it than that simply because I really think Season 3 Episode 13 was BAD. I saw it and it was the first episode of FiM I sat through that made me actively _CRINGE_ all the way through it. I don't like that. That's too much like how old-school My Little Pony WAS, and not how Friendship is Magic was for the previous 64 episodes (for the most part).

But basically, if you get a Cutie Mark naturally, you get a clue--you get a clue as to the 2 or 3 likely ways you can run your life (for example: Applejack can be about her apples--the fruit--or about her Apples--her family). You get some leeway in terms of choices and interpretation, but if you ignore the thing _entirely_ odds are it'll act like a Minor Curse and slowly make your life miserable, if not drive you crazy.

In other words, there's some room for Free Will to exist in setting, but not very much. Once you find your calling--and one could submit that _finding your calling_ is itself an act of Will--you're stuck with it until some greater force lets you off the hook (for example, Romantic Love, Friendship, Sisterhood....basically anything that could work as an Element of Magic).

cutie marks are just indicators of a pony's talent, but their jobs aren't necessarily dependent on them. A pony may have flowers in her cutie mark, but never have a job related to flowers. People in real life often have talents unrelated to their job.

Nothing, really. It is simply an indicator of a pony's true talent.
In real life, you don't have to follow your dreams if you don't want to.
