Basically he left because he wanted Metallica to take a break (a year-long 'hiatus' as it were) so that he could focus on his side project and the other members said no so he quit. He went on to continue his own project Echobrain and I think he's currently playing in Voivod, but I'm not sure...

What Doug said is right. I just want to add to that. They never really respected him as a band member and friend. They played jokes and slightly ridiculed him. Examples are from the documentary A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica and San Diego 1992. There is a video of why he left and footage on youtube.
