The perambulatory aid aesthetic?

The onset of cold weather has set my shattered, arthritic ankle aflame, reminding me that I shall eventually need the aid of a cane to walk.

Is there such a thing in existence as an aesthetically pleasing walking cane/stick?

When I first got out of the hospital I used a cane and will need one again in the future.
I too was tired of the look of the generic aluminum stick and decided to build my own.
People liked them so well, I built and sold twenty five canes and walking sticks and still have a dozen in my collection.
I've used a dozen varieties of wood but my favorites are Dogwood and Diamond Willow.
I use a lot of brass, bone, horn, antler, leather and mammoth ivory in their construction.
Some required the use of every tool in my shop while others were created in my lap with just a pocket knife, rasp and sandpaper.

Try to find one here that you think you have the skills and tools to create.

Then you need to go into the woods to look for blank material, I like to cut fresh sticks in mid-winter when they're sap free and less prone to cracking as they dry.
The branches of some trees are stout enough to use in the final cane diameter while some lesser wood requires cutting over sized branches and carving them down to the stronger heartwood.

Oh goodness, darling, I'm sorry to hear that, but you can find some really beautiful canes or walking sticks out there.

I like the knobbly-looking, kind of natural ones that look like something Gandalf would have carried, but I've seen some carved and elaborately-shaped ones that were stunningly beautiful and made me feel all covetous.

A large Moses-style or Irish gnarled wood thick stick, six feet tall. It can double as a defensive weapon.

i just clicked on ourscott's link and i was amazed at the variety of walking sticks you can get! some of them are right down sexy! mind you, if you don't find one to your liking or decide to make your own, maybe you could commission a certain user above me to create something unique for you, lol!

yes, go antiquing. gentlemen used to carry nice canes. also try craft fairs and woodworkers' shops. here, local woodworkers set up shops in struggling malls, and my little brother got the most awesome spiral-cut oak cane from one.
