I do believe in God. I asked God to help me get rid of my anger and hate towards a few people who are awful human beings who continue to hurt me and others around me. How do I truly forgive someone? I am so tired of having all of this hate in my heart.

The frist person is my father in law. I live with him for 3 years. He is a drug addict. He constatnly abused us and put everyone down for just wanting to be happy. My mother in law still insists on him being near us and I can't stand him. He is the most selfish person on earth. The other is my brother in law....he is mentally insane and he just won't stop hurting everyone.

Forgiveness is given to those who are sorry, and who recognize the hurt they have caused and are really trying to not cause any more hurt. You say these people continue to hurt you. Therefore you cannot forgive them yet. To keep on trying to and feeling bad that you cannot forgive them is to emotionally abuse yourself. You need to see the situation for what it really is. These are people who apparently don't respect you, and you need to not keep putting yourself in a position to get hurt by them. Deal with that first, then you can work on healing from the damage they have caused.
It's an odd thing when I examine forgiveness. The only thing I can count on concerning forgiveness is that Jesus talked about us doing it and it's an act of obedience to do it. Then there is the part of forgiveness concerning letting myself off the hook; apparently a selfish act, so that I don't have to carry a grudge all my days over something someone else did to where I felt wronged.
But there is another part of forgiveness- the attempt to let someone else off the hook as well as me. So the apparent selfish act turns into an act of compassion- so that the other person can feel free of resentment and grudges about whatever was wrong.
So this forgiveness thing is applicable to the betterment of relations of both parties. And I find that it fosters peace, which is really the kind of life I seek to live; a peaceful life.
I'd learn martial arts or something to protect your rights if people try to take away what's yours. Other than that, understand that people are a product of genetics and environment, the random forming of the universe and all the things it contains. Most people can't really be taught a lesson once they're fully grown, but people do slowly learn. The key is to realise that it's not really anybody's fault the way they are, not really. That doesn't mean that you don't have to punch them in the face every now and then.
I've had the same problem. It is not easy. You need God's help to do it when the hurt and anger are deep. You make the decision with your will and forgive. It takes a little longer for your emotions to fall in line.
