I can't make sense of it. My lady friend is 52 yrs. old, unemployed, never smoke or drank or did drugs, no at risk behavior, yet the cheapest I have found coverage for her amounts to $436 per month. She has no health issues either.

Here's the problem...we have a 'for profit' HEALTH INSURANCE industry, and a 'for profit' HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY. That means that you have to pay for the profits of two separate though connected industries. More to the point, medical technology today is very expensive because unlike 3/4 of a century ago during the early years of HEALTH INSURANCE today medical science and technology can actually do things that back then were only science fiction.
We had a chance to establish MEDICARE for ALL situation, but because of the opposition from our friends in the GOP/Tea/Fox/Jesus party who seem to think that everything is 'socialism' that didn't happen.... if it did your HEALTH INSURANCE would cost half of what the HEALTH INSURANCE mafia charges. For some reason we 'working class' people are obligated to keep the HEALTH INSURANCE mafia's cash cow alive out of our meager hourly pay....hard cheese for us, eh?
I don't understand why she has to pay so much. Does she have kids or is she alone? I have one child on mine and it's over $600 a month and costs me nothing. I also live on a very low income. But what I have found is the yearly deductible is so high I won't be going to the doctor anyway. How they figure I can pay out $10,000 in a year is ridiculous.
If your friend makes a good wage that is probably why she pays so much.
