Looking for design ideas for a coverup?

First, I know this tattoo sucks.  You don't have to tell me that. :)  It was done a long time ago to cover up an even worse tattoo, so now I am looking to get it covered up.  The problem is, anything I think of doesn't really work with the design that's there.

My question is this:  When you look at this tattoo, are there any objects, animals, or designs that come to mind when you see it?  Phoenix and Dragon are the two I get most, so if you can think of something else, that would be helpful.  I appreciate any response.

Ohhhhhh a dragon would be rad! Curled up spitting flames into the air type deal, or bursting through green fire. I love doing that kind of stuff!

It also looks like it could be an eye, sideways. The thick black use could be used for a wolf or cat eye, maybe even an older woman. Or you could use the middle as some kind of orb with a person/creature/object etc. holding or surrounding it.

I'd opt for color because a rich color layout that's done well would distract from any weird lines that the previous tattoo could create within the new one.

i see a dragon, tribal dragon, with some color in his eyes and black/gray shading on possible areas, and a background of castle (in really light grey wash) or even flames :)
