Very good question, dear ratia!
If i might have the liberty to elucidate upon this noble matter... it is Truth which makes us free.... but this Truth (Reality "as it is in Heaven") must be acknowledged in the heart and soul of the captive. We were all captives of "sin" (the error, the lie)....in bondage through fear of death brought on by sin...staining the very conscience of our spirits, causing us guilt, under condemnation, as slaves of unrighteousness...serving the lusts and deceits of the fallen nature. BUT.... that glorious light, that radiant shine of the LOVE of our Heavenly Father, beaming with grace and truth, manifested to us His Only Begotten Son, who is the Liberator of our spirit, soul and body, who is "the Way, the Truth, and the Life".... "the image of the invisible God"...."the door of the sheep"...and the "Great Shepherd and Bishop of our souls".... came to set us free indeed... into "the glorious liberty of the children of God"...for which the whole creation also groans and travails for the manifestation of! : )
Before I go on... here are some references for the above: “Then Jesus said to the Jews who believed on Him, If you continue in My Word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32 MKJV)
It is essential to “continue in My Word”... for it is in the being disciplined by His Word that we are pruned, and circumsised in heart, and cleansed from all unrighteousness... And it is in the conforming to the righteous Truth that we are liberated from (or “...escape) the corruption that is in the world through lust” (sin's desire).
Also, as we see in this next passage it is “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
For the Holy Spirit “Comforter” is also “the Spirit of TRUTH” and it is “the Truth that shall make us free”.
But until this day, when Moses is read, the veil is on their heart. But whenever it turns to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away. And the Lord is that Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with our face having been unveiled, having beheld the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, are being changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Lord Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:15-18 MKJV)
Now, for some more background on what "Spiritual Liberty" is to me....I came across some interesting examples of what it means to be "FREE"...or to "go free".
“And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my sons. I do not want to go out free.” Exo 21:5
Free in this case is the hebrew word חפשׁי chophshı̂y khof-shee' meaning “exempt (from bondage, tax or care): - free, liberty.” This was used in the sense of freedom, or exemption, from servitude. In the N.T. We see Jesus speaking of this again: “Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Everyone practicing sin is a slave of sin. But the slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains to the age (into the eon). Therefore, if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed. “ (John 8:34-36 LITV)
This greek word which was used for free is a great equivalent for chophshı̂y: eleutheros el-yoo'-ther-os “unrestrained (to go at pleasure), that is, (as a citizen) not a slave (whether freeborn or manumitted), or (generally) exempt (from obligation or liability): - free (man, woman), at liberty.”
Here we see a few more examples of NT liberty mentioned: "The Spirit of the Lord is on Me; because of this He has anointed Me to proclaim the Gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim deliverance to the captives, and new sight to the blind, to set at liberty those having been crushed, (Luke 4:18 MKJV)
(But not even Titus, the one with me, a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.) But because of those false brothers stealing in, who stole in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus; they desiring to enslave us; to whom not even for an hour did we yield in subjection, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. (Galatians 2:3-5 MKJV)
Gal 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty with which Christ has made us free, and do not again be held with the yoke of bondage. For, brothers, you were called to liberty. Only do not use the liberty for an opening to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the Law is fulfilled in one word, even in this, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (Galatians 5:13-14 MKJV)
So speak and do as those who shall be judged by the Law of liberty. (James 2:12 MKJV)
For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they lure through the lusts of the flesh, by unbridled lust, the ones who were escaping from those who live in error; promising them liberty, they themselves are the slaves of corruption. For by whom anyone has been overcome, even to this one he has been enslaved. For if they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the full knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and are again entangled, they have been overcome by these, their last things are worse than the first. (2 Peter 2:18-20 MKJV)
But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours becomes a stumbling block to those who are weak. (1 Corinthians 8:9 MKJV)
Now as concerning your quote from Urantia... there may be truth in that statement...I also believe that He came to proclaim LIBERTY to the captives.... but one warning (as i have not thoroughly examined the text) would be to make certain that there is no departure form the "narrow way" and the "strait gate".... "for BROAD is the way and WIDE is the gate (including a sense of false liberty to meander and wander anywhere one wishes) that leads to destruction....and MANY there be that go in thereat", Jesus said.
Go in through the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many there are who go in through it. Because narrow is the gate and constricted is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. (Matthew 7:13-15 MKJV)
Thanks for asking, dear ratia, have a wonderful and truth filled day, and may we "strive to enter in at the narrow gate."
P.s. One might also consider what it means to "go in and out and find pasture"...(after, of course, we enter through the narrow gate...(Jesus (Yeshua) alone as the door/way/truth/life)
