I have been told by Toshiba that there is a prohibition at a machine level for loading Linux on their laptops. Does anyone know a way around it. The only information they could give me was that it would take signficant reworking of the laptop which would invalidate the warrenty. Any suggestions?

You would have to wipe the HD, then install Linux via a CD.
Wouldn't recommend it if it voids the warranty, because if you mess up anywhere during the installation, they won't be able to help you.

In BIOS, turn off UEFI. The you can boot anything you like. Doing this cannot possibly harm the hardware, so it does NOT invalidate the warranty - just re-install Windows if you need to hand it in for a warranty repair.
You do NOT have to wipe the HDD. You can install for dual-boot alongside Windows, and then choose at each boot which you want.
