Let me correct the typo--do you think it's odd that there are so many voice students that are asking for songs to sing for their lessons or recitals? Apparently their teachers just have them bring in random songs. No voice teacher I ever had did this, though as a more advanced student, I did bring in things I wanted to work on. However, they STILL assigned me specific music, and they always worked with me on repertoire for recitals.

Yep your right Birdgirl.
Just proves how many unqualified "singing Teachers' are out there, and when it comes to the Education system music teachers, just how lazy they are in setting up the units of their teaching.
I also set specific songs but many of my clients also bring in their preferred songs especially if they are singer/songwriters and are working on their albums.

I really believe that most that are asking for suggestions are school related learners and not private students.
Repertoire is so important for youngsters when their knowledge of life is so small and I really hate youngsters singing songs that they have no clue what they are singing about.
So, your right, I agree. [as usual]

Thanks. I frequently brought songs I wanted to work on to my voice lessons, including things I specifically had to prepare for performances or concerts. (My voice teachers ALL did some coaching duties helping me with style, interpretation, etc). However, it's disconcerting that young beginning students are given NO guidance whatsoever. I've been very, very lucky. It's only because I had great teachers that I know half the stuff I do.
