I live in Wisconsin and have a wedding to attend on New Years Eve. While my closet is FULL of things I could wear to a summer wedding, I've never actually been to a winter wedding because no one seems to want their wedding in weather that could potentially be 20 below 0...so while I'm normally good at picking clothes, I'm at a loss here.
Both ceremony and reception are being held in a trendy wine bar, so cocktail attire, but I really have no idea what I can pick that will look good but still keep me from freezing if I should have to go outside... Help?

This stupid new format makes me forget things. I'm 28 and like clothing that is dark but still girly, in case that is relevant.

Maybe like a dress with tights underneath, and flats? And a cardigan over the dress. You can probably wear a coat over your dress, but make it a pea coat so it looks nicer and goes better with a dress. You can prob also wear a hat and gloves (like the nice knit kind, not the outdoorsy athletic-looking kind) and just take it off when you get inside
It is determined by the weather for me really. In the fall I love to wear longer skirts and in the wintertime I wear longer ones with my boots, but in the summertime and spring and coil I favor to wear short summer time dresses.
Most venues have coat rooms. I had my wedding in Chicago on New's Year Eve. Guest came in long winter coats and boots. And left them in the coat room- they wore cocktail dress and heels inside. The room did have the heat on and with lots of guests no one was cold. You do not have to wear winter clothes
This is where a stadium coat comes in handy - because you can't really dress warmly for a wedding, nor would you want to.
Given that it's going to involve wine, you may as well look for a burgundy colored wool skirt or suit - you can't (no really, please) wear black, but burgundy would be pretty and great for spills...or it comes in peacock blue-

You could easily wear snow boots, and pack heels in a bag - you're not going to be the only one trying to figure out how not to look like a trapper once you get inside the venue!
