Is it true that Vikings from Scandinavia came to North America even before Christopher Columbus?

If they did, what proof is there to prove it?

L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland is the remains of a Viking settlement. Dating has shown that the settlement was there before Columbus sailed for the New World. Lief Ericson drew maps of the east coast of N America and wrote descriptions of the lands he discovered. The Vikings may have even sailed as far south as Virginia.

Archaeologists have found Norse artifacts at a number of sites, not just the famous L'Anse aux Meadows. Google something like / Norse in North America/ and you'll find plenty material. You could also read the Vinland Saga.

Structures left by the Vikings in Rhode Island and Eastern Canada indicate that the Vikings tried to establish a colony here like they did in Greenland.
However the local natives fought them off.
