Dog ( 1year) has started to get up at 2AM or so needing to go out, he was potty trained and has gone the whole night before.?

This has been going on for a couple weeks, usually we take him out before we go to bed and I guess one night we did not and he really had to go. Now it just seems like it is an expectation. How do we progress to get him back to staying in the whole night. It is messing with our sleep to have to get up at 2 for him and then 4 for the cat.

He's still potty trained since he gets you up to go out. But you didn't say if was poo or pee or both. So, if it's poo, then start feeding him his evening meal earlier - say around 5 p.m. or so, then no more food after that. If it's pee, and you have ruled out a UTI with a vet check, then pick up his water by around 6 p.m. or so.

Other than a health issue, your year old dog should easily be able to hold it through the night.

You are right, he got confused one night and now thinks that's what he needs to do. If you can totally rule out any bladder infection, then you can pick up his water dish after 7 pm. Be sure to take him out just before you all go to bed. And when he comes to go out, you say, NO go back to bed. And don't get up. After a few nights he should be back to normal.

It's a simple fix compare to the problems I have with my dog. Just let him whine through the night, and he knows he wouldn't get anything.

And texperson is right, let him out before you sleep will definitely help.

Take it and a fresh urine specimen to your vet.
