Why is the USA called "America" when it is not the only nation in the Americas?

It's called America because it's short for "The United States of America".

The United States is also called America because it is the only country with America in its name.

Because the other parts of the America's are known by the names of those countries..............like Canada ., Mexico, Honduras, Brazil...........etc........and the USA is technically known as the UNITED STATES of America..........since the USA is actually made up of 50 individually states...........hence, the United States part.

Where are these 50 united states located? In the America's.

Sooooooooo. the United States of America..........

not the United States of China or Europe.

Because we got there first with the name.

Before the US was founded the countries in the Americas did not use "America" in their name. Now several of them have long official names that include the word but we still say Mexico, Brazil and other names not their long formal names.

Surely ,it's to do with the fact that people are just plain lazy when describing things and countries. They just can't be bothered to describe in more detail the country they mean,so just take it for granted that when people say America, they mean The United States of America.
