We have a huge family tree (as in HUGE, as over five generations including 700 people). I'm looking for geneaology software that will NOT connect to the internet sources like findagrave.com, ancestry.com, etc....because frankly, our family history nobody's business but ours. I don't want this correct information out there for others to find. Any recommendations on non information sharing software?
I like Roots Magic, but there are others. You can Google genealogy software comparison or genealogy software reviews and see lots of opinions.
I was a computer programmer for 35 years, and I know good database design when I see it. RM has the best I've seen. I have tried FTM and PAF, and have received GEDCOM files full of mistakes from people who used other programs.
It normally sells for $29, but when version 7 came out they hauled a bunch of version 6 CDs out of the warehouse and are selling them for $9.95 through Amazon. (I'm still chugging along with version 3.)
"Best" is a subjective term; all of the genealogy programs have their fans. Read some reviews.
As a side note, once every year or so I make a "Public" version of my data. I hide all details of people born less than 100 years ago, even those who have died, because, as you say, it's no one's business who is a widow and who had a child still-born. Then I upload a GEDCOM to Roots Web World Connect. I've met a lot of cousins and learned a lot of things I didn't' know about distant ancestors that way.
Software, by definition IS offline.. a program that you download. You are confusing websites with software. I use Gramps, which is open source (free) and am very happy with it. http://genealogy-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ https://gramps-project.org/
using free software allows you to become familiar.. if it isn't enough, you can purchase a program and "gedcom" (transfer) the data over.
There are many ones you purchase and ones that are free and "best" is what suits you.......and I couldn't agree more your research is your business and to keep not give away to companies who offer "trees" online as once put in to their website it belongs to them and they use it to attract other people however there are too many trees online that are nothing more than copied and pasted data and no research has gone into it at all.
I use Brothers Keeper, I tried a few prior and BK suits me best and you can try it first and even use the free one although the paid version offers more go to "General Family History Resources" on http://familytimeline.webs.com/apps/links/ the second link is BK and there are other links to other off line software too
most software is OFFLINE and you would have have to ALLOW others to view your files if online and the idea of doing that is to find other people who might share your family tree that you didn't even know about - I found new branches in my extended family thru Ancestry.com that I never would have discovered. just google genealogy software - you'll get dozens of links
