It would help if I knew which Mac model you have. IE: The mid to late 15" MacBook Pro and the Mid 2007 and on iMac according to Apple max at 4 gb, but will recognize 6 GB.

A easy way to find out is to go to http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory and select your model of Mac. See what they offer for memory upgrades. if they say it can handle 6, or 8, or whatever, you can count on them being correct.

Find out what it supports. Our 2007 Macbook only supports 4 GB, but that is plenty for everything we do with it.

It's slow mostly because of it's ancient hard drive, not because of a lack of RAM.

Add RAM dude. Go to iStore.
Be sure to pay them.

Officially it will only see 4GB but they will often run with 6GB (2GB and 4GB). What are you doing that 4GB is not enough?
