Why does my body do better when I run?

I know it's exercise, but I'm not running very far or fast. However, it seems to help my bowels stay regular and give more energy the next day. Nothing else is different. My diet is still the same, but my weight usually goes down more steadily on weeks that I run. I do not react this way with other exercise of the same intensity level.
