It looks like Yahoo has once again started repeating numbers. We assume you start with a square sheet and cut 2" squares from the corners. Thus, your box is 2" deep. Since it has a volume of 72 in^3, its area must be (72 in^3)/(2 in) = 36 in^2 = (6 in)^2.

The open box has a length and width of 6".
