How to season a rolled steel griddle?

I have a serious cooking gadget habit, and just bought a 36" flat top griddle. I tried to season it with olive oil, and got the top center to 525°, but the edges didn't color at all. Will a heating torch or some other method help me get the whole top the same color? Its too big to fit in my oven like a cast iron skillet. It pretty much works as it is, but i't ugly.

RE: Put it in the oven. The oven is 26", and won't accommodate.
TR: Another oil. Ill try that. Guess I should remove what I can of the residue with Dawn and start over?

Remove the racks from your oven and the griddle should fit inside. It may have to go in on an angle but it will fit.
Also olive oil is not the best to season with. Try Flax seed oil or a solid shortening or plain vegetable oil.
Since you seasoned a portion of the griddle you may have some gummy spots, if you do clean them off, scrub or use soap and water then apply the oil top, bottom and place in the oven. Without the racks it should fit. If not ask a friend if you can use their oven. I would let a friend use my oven to do that.

Do you have an outdoor grill, or know a neighbor with one? A charcoal smoker would do the best job.

I think you might have a hard time getting it all hot at the same time with a torch. But you could certainly try that.

Or you could put it over a big campfire!
