Normally I'd say no, but anything is possible. The way it works in Mississippi is that a number of candidates compete and if none of them have an outright majority of votes (as opposed to just having the most votes) then it goes to a runoff. In the election Espy got 40.6% of the vote and Hyde-Smith got 41.5% of the vote. So she beat him, but only by 0.9% and no one got an outright majority. So they will be going to a runoff. The safe bet is that Hyde-Smith will win this runoff. In the first round of voting there was another Republican, Chris McDaniel, in the race who got over 16% of the vote. Presumably in the run off most of those voters would vote for Hyde-Smith. So she's likely to win. OTOH, anything can happen. Neighboring Alabama elected a Democrat last year in a special election so Mississippi could do the same. Espy is relatively popular and the state, while deeply conservative, has the largest percentage of African Americans of any state (IIRC 30%). I think the only way Espy is going to win is if Republicans sit out the next round of voting. Maybe they were motivated to turn out earlier because of other races, including the states other Senate seat which was up for election. It's possible they may not turn out in the same numbers this time, perhaps allowing Espy to win through greater enthusiasm among Democrats. The other wild card is a controversy which has recently roiled the race. A few days ago, in comments caught on tape, Hyde-Smith told a supporter that she'd like to sit front row at a hanging. There was nothing overtly racial in her comments, but in a state like Mississippi, with a long history of racism and where lynching was once common, the comment has caused an uproar. Hyde-Smith hasn't handled the response to it well either and even some Republicans are worried about it

Espy has a past of corruption, yes she will when even with the smear stuff they are trying

Of course he has a chance, but it's unlikely.

No. The race was close only because there were two conservatives on the ballot. With McDaniel off the ballot, Hyde-Smith should win the runoff election handily.
