Just because she looks at you and smiles doesn't necessarily mean she's interested in you. She's allowed to look at you and to be friendly without it meaning she's got the hots for you.
That being said, you're free to ask her on a date if you'd like. It;s preferable to do it in person, but if Facebook is the ONLY way to connect with her then go that route. If she agrees to a Facebook message asking for a date, then ask for her number and call her directly.
