What is it about Super Hero movies that make them so popular?

With the release of the MCU in back in 2008 with its first film, Iron Man, people seem to really come to these comic book super hero movies more and more with each one. Even in DC with the newest Joker movie, people flooded the movies to see it.

According to Wikipedia (at the time of this question), all 4 Avengers movies are within the Top 10 highest grossing movies. The next one down the list is Black Panther at number 12. Aquaman coming in topping the DC movies at number 20.

Growing up, I was never into super heroes, in the end always saving the day, keeping their identities a secret, etc. I didnt even watch much Power Rangers, but I still like that series.

But what is it about super heroes that makes them so great and popular though?

Most of these MCU movies are feasts for the senses. People like bright colors. Explosions. Fights. Big sweeping camera shots. In these kind of classic superhero narratives story and character aren't so important. Nothing wrong with that if that is what amuses you.

Probably a passing fad
but note that the special effects and writing of some of these movies were both top-notch.

It's only relatively recently that typical comic book superheros can be presented "believably" using something other than animation. I mean: Batman never had superpowers, and he was one of the first big superhero films of recent decades - and a big hit. So: they tried with others, hoping to duplicate that success, and did in several ways (I would have mentioned the first X-Men movie as groundbreakingly successful), adding more and more powerful / extravagant superheroes as CGI improved.
