I read something about that black Chief of Police having had some problems with the police department in the years before he became chief. Filing some kind of discrimination grievance which was resolved in his favor. And then he ended up getting promoted to chief after that. Maybe that was why.
Maybe he had threatened to sue the police department so they cut a deal. Made him chief. Anyway if you have a racist police department it’s always good to appoint a black chief because it looks good, you know what I mean? Who knows? I’m just “riffing” here, if Trump can do it why can’t I?
So maybe once he got to that chief position by working the good ol’ boy system so skillfully, maybe he didn’t want to create any more waves that might jeopardize his own improved standing, pay grade, etc. Again, this is conjecture on my part. But I wouldn’t be surprised, either. It’s human nature sometimes. Life is good, you don’t rock the boat
So maybe he just decided to look the other way if his officers were brutalizing people. Maybe he just figured it would be swept under the rug as usual so he might as well help effectuate that. Cops stick together. They watch each other’s backs. What’s good for one is good for all.
Watch that old Al Pacino movie “Serpico” sometimes if you want to see what happens to cops who go against the code of loyalty and silence, go against their brothers. It can be a death sentence. Literally. That movie is based on a true story.
It’s a very tightknit fraternity, the police world. It’s “them against us” more often than not. If it’s between us going down or them going down, It will usually be us.
And if these brutal cops do get charged, the courts will often look the other way and have, historically.
The rationale is that you can’t be too hard on cops who are brutal because then they “wouldn’t be able to do their jobs.”
It’s debatable whether we’d even talking about any of these things if a civilian with balls and a smartphone hadn’t been there that day. This police dept. might have successfully swept this all under the rug just like they did with the other brutality cases involving their officers.
