why do people think a 22 year old dating a 17 year old is pedophilia?

People don't know the definition of that word. It's attraction to prepubescent children. And a 17 year old is miles more developed/mature than a 12 year old. I can't stand when people lump me in with people who like middle schoolers.

For the record, my fiancee was 17 when I met her and I was 22. We've been together for over 3 years. Some people on twitter were telling me they weren't even happy for us because I went after a "minor" even though where I live it's legal (age of consent where I live is 16). She had a late birthday and I had an early birthday, so it seemed like we were 5 years apart but if you go by years it's really 4.

legally no, 17 year old attraction is not pedophilia even if the age of consent is 18. that doesn't make it pedophilia. because at that point you're changing the definition of the word. if the age of consent in canada is 16, and have sex with a 17 year old you're not a pedophile there. but in california, you are? see, that makes 0 sense.

it's not pedophilia but sex is still illegal"statatory rape"
it is wrong though a child 1-17 can not consent with an adult and anyone attracted to any minor 1-17 needs to seek help as what they like is harmful to them and the minor

Technically that's called "hebephilia". But in the places where the age of consent is 17 or younger no one would think of this guy as a "pedophile". People over 25 would look at this relationship and see the vast maturity disparity between the two of you. But if it's not illegal it's just probably a matter of them wondering what you and this teen could possibly have in common (outside of sex).

Because they have no idea what pedophilia is plus they confuse pedophilia with child molestation. And do not realize the vast majority of child molesters are not pedophiles. For those who understand what pedophilia is, it is a psychiatric disorder, not a crime,  in which an adult or older adolescent experiences a primary or exclusive sexual attraction to prepubescent children. Although girls typically begin the process of puberty at age 10 or 11, and boys at age 11 or 12, criteria for pedophilia extend the cut-off point for prepubescence to age 13. A person must be at least 16 years old, and at least five years older than the prepubescent child, for the attraction to be diagnosed as pedophilia

In MY State someone who is attracted to someone who is under age is considered a pedophile.

Let's see.  She's now 20 with apparently NO lifetime experience,and you are 25.  I predict a disaster.

No. The age of consent in most western countries is 16 just as it is in some States of the USA. It also depends on what you mean by "dating". If "dating" means "going out with", as it did when I was younger, then the ages of the people involved are irrelevant. If it means "having sex with" then age of consent laws come into effect.

Paedophilia is sex with children, usually pre-pubertic children, it does not refer to sex with people in their late teens.
