How long is a reasonable amount of time to expect one employee to do two jobs while you look for someone else?

Our receptionist quit and I have been having to answer the phones and the door (from my desk upstairs) in addition to doing my own job, while they look for someone else. They’ve gotten 166 resumes and interviewed 3 people. They are running the ad again because they just can’t find the right person. It’s a receptionist! Not a high level VP or anything!

It’s not logistical for me to do both jobs permanently. My job and my work is upstairs. I also don’t sit at my desk all day, I’m all over the office upstairs. Trying to catch the phone and running downstairs to answer the door is a nightmare. And it’s a really bad idea for them to have me doing both these jobs.

If you are able to do both jobs at the same time, I'd suggest that it's actually one job and you were being underutilized prior.    You yourself implied the job was not difficult.

Maybe your desk should be moved closer to the door so it's easier for you.

Companies are short-staffed.   Some people are afraid to work.   Others have to stay home with their kids who no longer have school or child care.   Wages have gone up even though revenue may be down.  Businesses are in a tough spot.

I had to do the job of two people for eight months before a replacement was hired. It really sucked.
