Perhaps this is just my experience, but I have noticed that protagonists are seen eating or drinking less often than antagonists are. Does it have something to do with the hero being slightly elevated above the average human in the story and not wanting to show them doing such mundane human activities as consuming food?

I have noticed the same thing, I think it is more about the manner in which they eat.

Films and tv rarely show anyone actually eating at all.They talk and then just get up and leave.
They did a great job in lord of the rings showing a king eating though while his son was getting slaughtered in battle

The foulest eating habits are followed closely by those above the average human. 10.7% said they had seen their partner re-use dirty plates and cutlery on a regular basis to avoid the washing up. But it seems this shameless activity doesn't stop at home.
