Replicants were defined as very humanlike androids but, in the new movie current replicants are being made. Now they are clearly bioengineered humans-so artificially insemenated super-humans not androids. Calling the different types of being the same thing causes great confusion if the comments from friends (who are scifi fans mean anything) are any indication.

The rules were modified . The first batch of replicants, rebelled due to their inability to process emotions. The were born as full grown adults, programed to preform task. The newer bunch are also bio-engineered but with false memories and safe guards to keep them keep them under control. They aren't mechanical, but their made of something a lot stronger than flesh and blood.

Replicants are explicitly defined as bioengineered beings, and Ridley Scott confirmed their organic nature long before 2049.
