It's understandable.  
It was probably mostly Whites who opposed it, I'd imagine, because they know they're much better off when left alone. But, of course, non-Whites know they'd be left behind, in the dirt, literally in many cases, if they didn't leech onto Whites and demand access to everything they've created - and so 'integrated schools' was a must for them.
