What are the best day trips to take from Frankfurt?

Something that can be done 8 hours round-trip would be great.

A lot will depend on your priorities and style of traveling (suitable for families, most famous places etc), here are my personal favorites:

-trainride from Frankfurt to Bonn or Cologne (around 3 hours one way) along the Rhine river with an so called "IC" Intercity train (not the new highspeed train). Take a seat in the restaurant of the train (lots of windows) and enjoy one of the most romantic views. You will have time to visit the large cathedral in Cologne (right next to train station)!

-day trip to old town Heidelberg and its surroundings "Weinstrasse", a beautiful, hilly wine region

-A train takes you as well to Strassbourg, heart of the fantastic French Alsace region (my favorite)

-heading South Wuerzburg and Bamberg are also very nice day trips and cities worth while going (lots of good food, wine areas and very pretty old parts of the towns)

    Have fun!

Frankfurt is a powerful and global economic and industry fair town most abundant in imposing skyline in Germany and is one of many places that you need to see, a minumum of one time and this place hotelbye may help you. Frankfurt is really a town in one's heart of Germany and Europe and is really a city that could offer many facets and diverse variety. In the heart of Frankfurt's Old Town you will see a place well suitable, the Römerberg. The Römerberg is an irregularly designed square with the Justice Fountain at its center. Not just can it be Frankfurt's most picturesque public square, it's the city's busiest pedestrian region, house to numerous tourist attractions from its several Kulturschirn (a kind of open-fronted shop once popular throughout the previous town) to the Römer, a complicated of 11 lovely old structures from the 15th to 18th ages that include the Old Town Hall with its Imperial Hall, after the world of splendid banquets. Different significant houses are the New Town Hall, the 14th-century Gothic Church of St. Leonhard, and St. Nicholas Church, notable for the carillon.

Definitely a nice trip during spring/summer/early autumn is the wine region south of Frankfurt called the "Bergstraße". Lots of charming wineries and nice vineyards where you can take a walk with a good view over the rhine-valley.

Also a "must-see" is the cloister "Lorsch" in the town Lorsch south of Frankfurt. The cloister is UNESCO world cultural heritage. It has been founded in 764 n.Chr. and boasts historical buildings and a museum.

When you have had enough wine and cultural input there is the "turmkino" in the centre of frankfurt that shows english movies.

I lived in Germany (about 2 hrs south of frankfurt) for 3 years. listed the following are some places that I loved: Heidelberg, Idar-Oberstein- (has a church equipped right into a mountain, some good procuring, large nutrients), Trier- (important cultural section). i imagine you will get to France from Frankfurt interior 2 hours besides,so in case you want to bypass to France, inspect the little cities alongside the German border. (who the hell needs to bypass to a touristy position besides?) the most interesting I ever had changed into when I jumped interior the motor vehicle and purely drove uintil i found something cool- be it a citadel, a bar, or a wide cathedral. it is lots extra interesting to discover stuff that's off the beaten course.

You definitely should not miss Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It's one of the best-preserved medieval cities, with a wall that goes all the way around the town. There are many things to do there, and it's really easy to walk around in once you drive there. Some fun things to do are:

    - Medieval torture museum

    - Nightwatchman tour - http://www.nightwatchman.de/

    - Altes Rathaus (city hall) with its clock that depicts the Meistertrunk (a mayor who saved the town from barbarians by drinking 3 liters of wine in one draught)

Source(s): I've been to Rothenburg three times
