    You sit on the thwart of a rowboat, which runs athwart the boat, that is it runs transverse from side to side. The word also works for canoes too.

    athwartships

    The term is also used to refer to right angles to the centerline of the boat; across the ship or boatfrom side to side. Rowboat seats are generally athwartships.
