In 1042, Saxon king Edward the Confessor returned to the throne with the aid of the English nobles. When Edward died in 1066, without an heir, his relative William, duke of Normandy, a vassal to the king of France, stepped forward and claimed the throbe of England. The English nobles ignored William's claims for the throne and appointed Harold Godwin king.

William was not satisfied. He decided to settle the score in battle and sailed to England with 10,000 men. Godwin's forces fought him at the Battle of Hastings on October 14th, 1066. After a brutal, day-long battle, William's forces were victorious. Even Godwin himself was killed in the clash. William then marched to London to be crowned king and was given the name "William the Conqueror."
