Check out Title 36, Chapter 10, section 175, part m:

The flag shall be flown at half-staff thirty days from the death of the President or a former President; ten days from the day of death of the Vice President

I beleive there is no specific requirement to fly the flag at half mast nationally for past presidents. The US Govt often smandate that the flag fly at half mast on government buildings until the past president is buried.
When JFK was assassinated in 1963, the flag was at half mast for 30 days.
