Cocker Spaniel question...?

I am looking into buying a Cocker within the year or so. (Hopefully!)

I grew up with this breed and adore them. One of my last ended up with a terrible case of hip dysplasia. We never, ever suspected this in the breed. Is this a common issue? This particular pooch was a rescue dog, who we loved very, very much, but I never want to see another dog go through this misery.

I'm so sorry about the last cocker you had.

Hip dysplasia is not a big problem among cocker spaniels, but it is a pretty common problem among dogs in general. As they age, their hip joints can get out of whack easily.

However, there are things you can do preventively to make sure your cocker's hip joints will stay healthy. One is to try to make sure that when he plays, it's on a padded surface (e.g., carpets grass, or rugs instead of hardwood or concrete). Another is to try to limit tons of jumping movements (though this is hard, because dogs will be dogs, and you don't want to deprive them of too much fun!). And you may want to add a glucosamine supplement (such as Cosequin, or ask your vet) to your future cocker's food, to help lubricate its joints.

Don't let fear of hip dysplasia stop you from a lifetime of wonderful companionship with your next cocker. Chances are he won't get it, and the truth is that when a dog gets old, there are many other ailments that can strike.

No, hip dysplasia is most common in large dog breeds, not medium or small breeds. Though all breeds can develope it. Hip Dysplasia simply means poorly formed hip. If you get a grown dog, have it vet checked then. If you buy a puppy, get a health guarantee (normally 1 year)against hip dysplasia. Make sure you see the parents and ask if the seller has had the test done on the parents. Good Luck &
