Yesterday my 120 GB slave Western Digital drive stopped showing up on My Computer. Any way to fix the drive?

Update:

It has 7 partitions.( there was a power failure 3 times yesterday). A cranky sound is coming from the hard disk when it is powered up. And as long as it is connected as a slave, the computer does not even start. I connected it thru an IDE to USB device to my laptop and the storage device is seen on hardware profile but I cannot see the partitions.

I want to copy some of the data, but how to go about this possible hard disk physical failure.

Update 2:

It did not crash but there was a power blackout here.

Check all the cables and connections.

If your device is detected by the OS then that is a start.

    Check in the following location:

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management

If your device is shown here then great, but be warned your data may be lost and you may need to reformat the drive.

However, if you are hearing a cranky sound then it may be that the drive has given up. Not a good sign.

Check all of the above to make certain. If it is a new disk then return it or get it replaced. If unfortunately you need to buy a new disk, then AVOID Western Digital. Get Seagate or Maxtor.

    Good Luck

did it crash? Check the power and signal cable to it. Also, make sure the bios recognizes it.
