Maybe at times but people also lie about their past because they are trying to do different or better and the past isn't something to judge people by if they are trying to change.

Some use lying to reduce anxiety or build self esteem. Some people, usually narcissists and other personality disordered, are pathological liars and lie because it is part of who they are. They lie about the past, present and future and are quite good at it. Often lying gets them nothing.

people who would lie about their past are trying to impress or they are pathological liars who lie about anything and everything, they can't help but lie.
