I live in Mountain View, CA; I need a porcelain crown on one tooth. What should this cost?

I can understand $500-$650 for such work, but I was quoted $950, and I gotta ask, "Is this reasonable?" The dentist is very good, I should note, he has worked on my teeth before, including crowns, but the price this time seemed out of line.
