What should be my first bike?

Buy a 650 yamaha v-star classic. Find a used one on ebay close to where you live. It has the same engine as the virago but handles way better. The virago hasn't been made for about 10 years now. 250 ninja will fly, and will not use much gas, and is very easy to handle. If you buy a 600cc sportbike, remember the throttle works both ways.

The first thing you should do is sign up for one of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) beginner rider courses in your local area. They will teach you most of what you need to know to ride a motorcycle safely. This course is also requited in many states before you can get a motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license

You will meet other new riders at this course, and may find some riding buddies so you don't have to ride by yourself. You will have to provide your own helmet, boots and riding gear, but a motorcycle will be provided for you during the riding portion of the course. what type of bike do you like? a sport bike, street bike, hog? If you like sport bikes, go with a 600 like a cbr600, gsxr600, or even a katana600.. I wouldn't waste my money on a 250 of any kind.
