The word axis has several meanings:

In mathematical contexts, including physics and engineering, it often means a coordinate axis.

In geometry-related contexts, such as engineering drawings, it can also mean an axis of rotation, or an axis of symmetry

In anatomy, the axis is the second cervical vertebra of the spine.

In politics, it may refer to:

A quasi-mathematical parameter which is used to describe some characteristic of someone or something. See Political spectrum.

The Axis Powers of the Second World War were : Germany/Italy/Japan because they were pivotal powers that held a bloc of land which made other nations (the alliedpowers) need to attack them from different fronts.

The Axis Powers were those opposed to the Allies. The 3 major Axis powers, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan, referred to themselves as the "Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis". At their zenith, the Axis powers ruled empires that dominated large portions of Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, but they were ultimately defeated at the end of World War II. Like the Allies, membership of the Axis was fluid, and some nations entered and later left the Axis during the course of the war.

The United States in World War II

This was the worst war in human history. Three nations that were not happy with the results of World War I began it. These were Germany, Italy and Japan. Together they were called the Axis Powers. Their greed for the wealth and power to be gained by taking over neighboring nations and their colonies caused the war. This was their true motive, but they covered it up with an evil propaganda campaign about the their own racial superiority. Of course, this was scientifically false; there is no "master race." But it was how leaders like Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo gathered votes and support from people looking for easy answers. Racism was the core belief of German Nazis and other Fascists.

I couldn't exactly find why the it was called the axis of evils or the axis powers.

The Germans weren't called the Axis, but they were "part" of the Axis powers made up of Italy, Japan and Germany. Axis is synonymous with alliance, the "alliance of evil" or the Axis powers in WW II.
