How many mpg do I get on a commercial flight?
Let's say I go on a roundtrip flight from New York to LA. How much fuel is used per passenger? How many miles per gallon does each passenger get? How many months of driving a typical SUV does that compare to?

From Boeing's site, a 747 uses about 5 gallons per mile. Loaded with 500 passengers, that works out to be 100 person-miles per gallon. For a 2500 mile flight, each passenger consumes 25 gallons.
By comparison, a person driving an SUV that gets 17 mpg, can go about 425 miles on 25 gallons. If you drive 30 miles per day, thats just two weeks of driving. If you want 100 person-miles per gallon in an SUV, you'll be car pooling with a total of six people.
