A non-compete agreement is a legal contract and generally you can sign into any contract you want. Whether or not your specific non-compete agreement is legal and/or binding contract depends on state or local laws, the type of limitations your employer included, court decisions, and a variety of other factors.

Legal, but not always enforceable. Employers can impose geographical limits, for example, but not control where you can and cannot live. A non-compete clause rarely benefits the former employee, but protects the company from losing clients and proprietary information. After the terms of the agreement have been met, you're ostensibly free to do whatever you want.
